Tesla wants to hide a rocket thruster behind a license plate

The plate drops. A SpaceX-built cold-gas thruster fires. The Roadster launches like a James Bond car. That is Elon Musk's pitch—and Tesla has now put an October 1 unveiling on the calendar.

Why add thrusters to an electric car?

Even the strongest electric motor eventually runs into the same problem: the tires can only grip the pavement so hard. A rear-facing gas thruster could add forward force without asking the tires to do all the work. Smaller nozzles around the car could theoretically help with braking or cornering.

That creates a second list of questions: What happens to the car behind it? How loud is the blast? How many launches fit in one tank? What protects pedestrians, first responders and nearby traffic? And what regulator signs off on it?

Tesla no longer needs the Roadster to be merely fast. It needs the car to do something nobody else can easily copy—and a hidden SpaceX thruster would certainly qualify.
